Therapy for Long-Term Health Conditions

Specialist psychotherapy in Bath and online for adults living with diabetes and other long-term health conditions.

Living with a long-term health condition can affect far more than physical health. The ongoing demands of treatment, uncertainty about the future, changes to everyday life and relationships, and the feeling of having to manage something that never really goes away can all have a psychological impact.

Therapy can provide a space to explore these experiences without having to explain or minimise the realities of living with a health condition.

Specialist experience in diabetes

I have particular experience and expertise in the psychological impact of living with diabetes, developed through many years of specialist work within the NHS alongside my private psychotherapy practice.

This has given me an understanding of some of the particular challenges that can accompany diabetes, including the relentless nature of self-management, the impact on relationships and everyday life, and the emotional burden that can come with managing a condition 24 hours a day.

How therapy can help

Living with a long-term health condition can sometimes bring feelings of anxiety, low mood, frustration, grief or loss. It can also affect your sense of identity, relationships and how you feel about your body or your future.

Psychotherapy offers an opportunity to think about the emotional impact of illness alongside whatever else may be happening in your life. The aim is not to suggest that difficulties are “all psychological”, but to provide a space where the emotional consequences of living with a health condition can be understood and explored.

My specialist NHS experience

Alongside my private practice, I work within the NHS as the Service Lead of a specialist psychotherapy service. My work has included individual clinical work, developing and delivering education and training, and supporting healthcare professionals in understanding the psychological impact of diabetes.

My postgraduate research also focused on the experience of living with diabetes, and I have presented my work at Diabetes UK professional conferences.

Starting therapy

I offer psychotherapy for adults living with diabetes and other long-term health conditions from my private practice in Bath and online.

You do not need to come to therapy solely because of your health condition. Often physical health is just one part of a much wider picture, and we can think together about whatever is important to you.

If you are considering therapy, you are welcome to get in touch to tell me a little about what you are looking for and to ask about my current availability.
